During a recent dirt bike trip through South Dakota with a group of friends, Micah McRae and longtime friend Dan Webb made a stop at the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Like most visitors, they were impressed by the sheer scale of the project. Standing in front of a mountain that has been under construction for generations gives you a different perspective on what’s possible when people commit themselves to a vision over the long haul.

What caught their attention, however, wasn’t the monument itself.

It was the equipment.

The photo below shows Micah and Dan looking over one of the drilling rigs used during the project. To many people, it’s just an old machine sitting on display. To people who build things for a living, it’s a reminder of the work that made everything else possible.

Before Crazy Horse was a monument, it was solid rock.

Before any structure stands tall, somebody has to solve the challenges below the surface first.

That reality is what resonated with Micah and Dan. The first blast at Crazy Horse took place in 1948, but many of the fundamentals behind the work remain the same today. The equipment has evolved. Technology has improved. But builders still have to understand the ground conditions, work through unforeseen challenges, trust their experience, and execute with precision.

Those same principles apply every day in the deep foundation industry.

Dan has worked alongside Micah for over a decade on complex foundation projects. While most people see the finished building, they often find themselves discussing what’s underneath it—soil conditions, load requirements, risk factors, and the countless decisions that have to be made before a project can move forward with confidence.

The best foundation work is rarely noticed.

It’s buried beneath the structure.

Hidden behind finished walls.

And often forgotten once the project is complete.

But without it, none of the work above ground happens.

That’s one reason places like Crazy Horse resonate so strongly with construction professionals. They are reminders that extraordinary projects are built long before anyone sees the finished product. Behind every landmark, facility, and successful development are people willing to solve difficult problems, sweat the details, and take pride in their craft.

At McRae Enterprises, we believe the same principle applies to every project we undertake.

Whether we’re stabilizing an excavation, supporting a commercial facility, or installing a complex deep foundation system, our responsibility is simple: get the details right so our clients can move forward with confidence.

Because remarkable projects don’t happen by accident.

They’re built by people who take their craft seriously.

And masters will always recognize mastery.

To see that philosophy in action, take a look at our work on the Shepherdsville Aquatic Center, where careful planning, technical expertise, and precise execution helped create the foundation for a successful project.
